The official opening of Zubieta prison marks a commitment to reintegration in the face of the Martutene model
Pradales and Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska have taken advantage of the event to acknowledge the prison officials killed by ETA.
On Monday, President Imanol Pradales and the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, inaugurated the new prison in Zubieta, where the lehendakari claimed the prison system that places the person in the centre, in contrast to the old model of Martutene, a prison built in 1948 for the sole purpose of "guarding prisoners".
Pradales and Marlaska have expressed at the event their firm commitment to the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners within the current Basque prison system. In addition to explaining the details of this new management model, they have also taken advantage of the meeting to acknowledge the prison officials killed by ETA.
The memory of these three workers will henceforth be kept in the new area of Zubieta, where the memorial plaque brought from the old prison has been transferred.
What's Zubieta's new prison look like?
The prison is large and modern and has 400 places, 360 for men and 40 for women, to which must be added the 75 places that the CIS (Social Integration Centre) will occupy, an independent module for open situations and other forms of outsourcing of prisoners.
Zubieta Prison, located at the Eskuzaitzeta Industrial Estate, will havea total of six residential modules, one of them for women, and will also have a maternity unit.
