They found the first Baskonist number in Irulegi, "Abar", which could be the precedent of the current number "ten"
The discovery has been made by the Aranzadi Science Society in the Vascones camp in Irulegi (Aranguren Valley, Navarre). The inscription "Abar" has been found in a storage tank in the same house where the Hand of Irulegi appeared and is believed to refer to number ten.
Archaeological research in the Basque village of Irulegi, in the Aranguren Valley (Navarre), has revealed an important new discovery. The Aranzadi Science Society has found an inscription on a piece of storage pottery that may be the first Baskonist number documented so far.
The inscription found is "Abar" and is engraved on a ship located in thesame house where the Irulegi Hand was found in 2021. According to researchers, the term may be related to the Basque word "ten", indicating a numerical reference associated with the ship's capacity.
Javier Belaza, director of the study and epigraphic expert, explains that "we believe that 'Abar' is marking 'ten', that is, that ten of whatever can come in here." The researcher specifies that we do not yet know which units of measurement this amount corresponds to, since the metrological system used by the Vascons of that time is not known.
The inscription may indicate what quantity of a product could be kept on board, as is customary in other ancient cultures.
This discovery is in addition to those made in recent years in Irulegi, one of the most important archaeological sites in Navarre. The appearance of the Hand of Irulegi made it possible to document one of the oldest written testimonies related to the Euskera, and now this ceramic vessel has opened up new avenues of research on the language and daily life of the Vascons.
