The lively and joyful Sunday afternoon turned into a tragedy in the Navarrería area of the Old Town of Pamplona. A driverless glass pickup truck rolled down the slope uncontrollably, killing a young woman and wounding four other women, two of whom are seriously injured.
The square was crowded.
To understand what happened, you have to take into account the context in which the accident occurred. The Navarrería is one of the busiest leisure areas in Pamplona, because it has a large number of hotel establishments and is a pleasant pedestrian area.
Sunday was no exception. The celebration of LGTBIQ+ Pride Day and other events in the Old Town brought together hundreds of people in Navarrería Square and the street of the same name on the hill up to Cathedral Square.
The Decisive Moment
Around 3:30 p.m., the glass collection truck managed by Traperos de Emaus was stopped in front of the Amatxo bar in Plaza Catedral, at the end of Calle Navarrería. The driver, who has been working for years, was accompanied by two other workers.
The three workers got outof the vehicle and then the truck went down the hill alone, without a driver. The Pamplona Municipal Police are investigating whether the driver did not put the hand brake on, or whether the brake system failed when the three employees of the vehicle went down.
The driver got into the moving truck.
In the first few yards the truck didn't get too fast, but from 33 Navarrería Street, as the slope is higher, it went faster and faster, getting the driver into the cabin of the moving truck, but he couldn't stop in time to avoid catching the victims.
The truck drove about 50 meters out of control, causing panic in the Navarrería area. Along the way it took several fences and pipes and hit a group of women a few metres from the bar Los Burgos de Iruña.
The vehicle stopped at 16 Navarrería Street, a few metres before arriving at the hotel. Some of the victims were trapped under the truck and had to be rescued by the emergency services.
One dead and four wounded.
Four other women, aged 38, 30, 26 and 29, were injured in varying degrees.
According to the latest medical report, the 38-year-old woman suffers from multiple injuries and is admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Navarra University Hospital, in stable condition but with severe prognosis.
The 30-year-old woman also suffered multiple injuries, who is also admitted to the ICU, stable but severe. The 26-year-old woman suffered injuries to her limbs. She has already been discharged from her home. The 29-year-old woman suffered multiple bruises. She received hospital discharge yesterday.
