Bermeo, Elantxobe and Mundaka celebrate Madalena Day with a marine procession to Izaro
The ships of Bermeo went to the island of Izaro, and along the way the mayor threw a shingle into the sea to proclaim that the island belonged to Bermeo.
Bermeo, Elantxobe and Mundaka live today one of the most special days of the year, due to the celebration of the Magdalene. The marine procession and the tradition around the island of Izaro usually brings together thousands of people each year inBusturialdea, and the festive atmosphere will continue throughout the day in both localities.
In accordance with the custom of the year, the ships of Bermeo set off at noon for the island of Izaro, and on the way the mayor threw a tile into the sea to declare that the island belonged to Bermeo.
Legend has it that Bermeo won Izaro's possession of Mundaka in a regatta, and since then this symbolic gesture has been repeated every year.
And when the tile had been thrown into the sea, the people went to Elantxobe and Mundaka, following the custom. But before that, they made a common proclamation to the four winds, saying, "Thus far come the leaks of Bermeo."
Tribute to four Bermeo collectives
On this year's Madalena Day, four local groups have been honored in Bermeo for their anniversary: Alkartasuna dantza taldea (50th anniversary), Bermeo Comparsa de Gigantes (20th anniversary), Bermeo choir (70th anniversary) and Benito Barrueta Arte Elkartea (75th anniversary).
Representatives of these four groups have been on the boat with the council to live the Magdalene Day in person.

The launch of the ships and the maritime procession have been broadcast live by EITB on ETB1,via the ETB ON platform and on the ETB youtube channel.
The muffins, however, will not be confined to the villages of Busturialdea. Errenteria and Viana will also have their big holiday today, after yesterday's celebrations began. Both municipalities have organized sports shows, music concerts and activities aimed at all ages, so that the festive atmosphere will be present throughout the day.
