The blind will be able to follow the August 12 eclipse thanks to the LightSound device, whichtransforms the intensity of sunlight into sound the devices that will be located in different areas so that the blind can "hear" the astronomical phenomenon.
Juan Clerigo , professor of tyflotecnology and braille at ONCE, explains that the device has a sensor that detects the amount of light around it, which makes it sound. The devices are available to event organizers organized around the eclipse.
Where can you "hear" the eclipse?
The Eclipse Inclusivo initiative has reported more than 50 observation activities in which the LightSound system for the blind will be available, three of which are located in the Basque Country.
In two areas they will be able to enjoy a complete eclipse through this system: Lerin (with a maximum capacity of 5,000 people) and Sendaviva Park, both in Navarre. Also in theforal community, the devices of Cizur Menor will be installed, but there the eclipse will be partial.
How's LightSound working?
As the moon covers the sun, the tone changes. As the light changes, it becomes lower, and when the eclipse becomes complete, it disappears completely.
Clerigo believes that technology has changed the way blind people access information. "With technology, blind people are not so blind," he summed up.
Raúl Hernández , a specialist in support of the employment of ONCE in Aragón, Navarra and La Rioja, is also blind and believes that sound offers a "very nice" way to follow the eclipse.
"Sound is fundamental to perceiving everything we can't see, it's a very inclusive way to experience eclipse," he said.
