280,386 students start the school year in the Basque Country on Monday
There will be 59,200 fewer students in 2026-2027 than last year, when there were 339,586 students.
The Education Counsellor, Begoña Pedrosa, will begin the 2026-2027 year ofEarly Childhood Education, Primary Education, Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate on Monday, Jan. 7.
The opening of the course will take place at theMountain School (Álava) in Amurrio , which will be attended, in addition to the Education Counsellor, by the Mayor of Amurrio, Txerra Molinuevo.

In statements to EiTB, Pedrosa has pointed out that, following the diagnostic evaluation results of 2026, the education system is "gradually improving, but we must not be clueless." "We must look at the long term, and the important thing is to work systematically," Pedrosa added.
On the other hand, with regard to the Basque language, he has stressed that attention must be paid to the sociolinguistic situation in the area and to the language of the families. "It is very important that each school design a good language project and this is one of the innovations that we have in this course," he said.
