Fire extinguishment at Gardelegi landfill continues in Vitoria-Gasteiz
The fire started yesterday afternoon at the organic matter collection site and, for the time being, although the fire is perimeter, the nature of the materials slows down the total extinction work.
The fire that broke out yesterday afternoon at the Gardelegi landfill in Vitoria-Gasteiz is under control. The area is cordoned off and there is no danger that it will spread to the surrounding forest area. However, the extinction work is being difficult due to the internal combustion of accumulated waste , which is causing firefighters to keep the area cool.
The landfill is located south of the Alavesa capital, at the foot of the Montes de Vitoria, and the fire started yesterday afternoon in a specific area for the storage and treatment of organic material.
According to municipal sources, the emergency services have been running water all night, noting that the focus is very difficult to extinguish due to the nature of the burning material, to which must be added the absence of hydrants in the landfill itself, which is causing trucks to travel continuously to load the water supply.
The City Council has determined that the smoke generated and the smell of burning perceived by the population, caused by the fall in night temperatures and the change of wind, is a common phenomenon in this type of situation, and in this context they have stressed that this smoke poses no risk to the health of the population.
