Dozens of students and parents have walked from Zaldibia to Ordizia to demand school transportation
Dozens of students and parents from the Lardizabal school inZaldibiahave today travelled on foot to the IES Oianguren BHI school in Ordizia, where they painted a large mural with the slogan 'School transport is a right ', a protest action calling for the non-suppression of school transport for students at the levels DBH3 and DBH4.
In June last year, the Department of Educationof the Basque Government informed the parents of the pupils of Zaldibia that from the year 2026-27 the young people of DBH3 and DBH4 would be deprived of school transport, and the reason given was the distance from one school to another .
In fact, the decision is based on Decree 164/2023, which regulates the school transport of public non-university educational establishments in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (CAPV), which states that persons living less than 4 kilometres from the school are not entitled to transport. In the case of Zaldibia, the distance to the school in Ordizia is 3.8 kilometres.
From the outset, parents have made it clear that they do not share the decision, and have argued, among other things, that their children's pathto this road is not the right one. "It is an interurban road, without sidewalks, without lights, with a lot of traffic and no security. Therefore, even in the light of the decree, we believe that an exception must be made."
In view of this, in July the government put on the table another proposal : to go, to use regular public transport, and to return, to school transport.
Parents, however, believe that the second proposal is not acceptable either because it does not guarantee the safety of students, they say that there is no room for all students on public transport, and that there are many who should make the journey standing up every day. "It is not consistent, it is not serious, nor does it guarantee the safety of our children.
