The Salbe-Txorierri section of the Artxanda tunnels will be closed for five months, starting on November 2, due to construction, as reported this morning by Carlos Alzaga Anternational Infrastructure and Territorial Development Member at a committee of the General Meetings of Bizkaia.
The tunnel is 1,220 metres long and, according to the honourable Member, more than 13,500 light vehicles and 420 heavy goods vehicles pass through it every day.
Alzaga has explained that the work will focus primarily on repairing the structural damage detected and eliminating existing leaks.
The tunnels of Artxanda, which have been in operation since 2002, connect the Txorierri, Bilbao Airport and the Bizkaia Technological Park with Bilbao, with a total infrastructure of about 30,000 vehicles per day.
Alternative routes
The closure of the Salbe-Txorierri section will affect travel, while prior to road closures, the Department of Transport, Mobility and Tourism of Bizkaia will provide detailed information on changes in traffic and public transport and alternative routes during work.
