Bolivia turns right: presidential candidates Paz and Quiroga will compete in the second round of October
By surprise, the Christian Democratic Party candidate has won the first round of the presidential election ahead of former Conservative President Quiroga, while the left-wing MAS party that has ruled for 20 years has been left out of the second round.
The opposition candidate, Rodrigo Paz, has surprisingly prevailed in the first round of this Sunday's election to elect Bolivia's president and will compete with former conservative President Jorge Quiroga in the second round, with 92% of the votes counted, and the left-wing MAS party, which has ruled for 20 years, has been left out of the second round.
According to data released by the Supreme Electoral Court, the Christian Democratic Party candidate, Rodrigo Paz, has won 32% of the vote ahead of former President Jorge Quiroga (27%).
Third, with more than 20% of the vote, is center-right politician Samuel Doria , who has already announced that he will support the winner of the first round in the second round to be held on October 19.
That being the case, after nearly twenty years in power ,the S Movement for Socialism (MAS) has sunk almost to extinction, as presidential candidate Eduardo del Castillo, backed by President Luis Arce, has won 3% of the vote.
The former president of the left, Evo Morales, did not stand for election because he could not, so he asked for a null vote.
