The trade relationship between the European Union and Israel in figures
The European Union and Israel have had a close trade agreement since 2000. Last year the economic exchange between the two was EUR 42.6 billion; that is, the EU is Israel's main trading partner, ahead of the US.
Indeed, the US trade with Israel stood at EUR 31.6 billion in the same year, which demonstrates Israel's dependence on the EU, while for the Union Israel ranks 31st among the main trading partners.
The suspension or restriction of relations with Israel is under discussion in the European institutions. This decision will not be easy: in some cases it requires the approval of the Member States and in others it is the European Commission that has the final say, but if it were to take place it would be a blow to Israel.
In addition to trade relations, it should be recalled that Israel also receives European funds such as the Horizon research programme and international cooperation.
