The Trump administration has announced the end of the mass deployment of immigration agents in Minnesota
President Donald Trump's so-called "border tsar," Tom Homan, has confirmed the gradual withdrawal of the special operation deployed in the state, following opposition from the governor and the mobilization of neighbors.
The U.S. Government has begun withdrawing federal immigration agentsfrom the state of Minnesota, according to the White House, in an operation that is nearing completion.
President Donald Trump's so-called "border tsar," Tom Homan, announced on Thursday that a "significant reduction" in the number of agents is under way and suggested ending the special operation activated earlier this year.
In January, the Trump administration deployed about 3,000 armed agents from the ICE Immigration and Customs Control Service in Minnesota to increase deportations of migrants. The operation focused specifically on Minneapolis , the state's most important city.
"I have proposed the end of this special operation, and the president has agreed," Homan said at a press conference.
A week ago, the federal official advanced the withdrawal of 700 officers. This Thursday he specified that many of the other agents, displaced from other states, will return to their original destinations in the next few days. Homan has partly justified the decision by saying it is an "unprecedented" coordination with local security forces.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and other state elected officials have strongly criticized deportation operations and raids.
The interventions of federal agents, often with their faces covered and equipped with military camouflage uniforms, have provoked repeated protests in the Minneapolis suburbs.
