Putin has proposed a ceasefire in Ukraine for May 9, and Trump has supported him
Putin and Ukraine's leader, Volodimir Zelenski, agreed to two similar short truce by 2025. In any case, Zelenski calls for a ceasefire of at least 30 days, which Moscow refuses.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed in a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump a ceasefire with Ukraine on the occasion of Victory Day against Nazi Germany on 9May , the Kremlin reported on Wednesday.
According to Moscow sources, Trump has praised the ceasefire decreed by Russia and Ukraine on 11 and 12 April, on the occasion of the Orthodox Easter days, and recalled that "the feast commemorates the common victory against Nazism in World War II".
Although both sides accused each other of violating the truce on Easter, analysts have pointed out that no fronts were moved and that there were no massive drone attacks.
Putin and Ukraine's leader, Volodimir Zelenski, had already agreed to two similar short truce by 2025. However, Zelenski demands a ceasefire of at least 30 days, which Moscow has not accepted.
In a telephone call on Russia's initiative, the Kremlin says, Trump has stressed the "importance" of urgently suspending military action in Ukraine.
Although peace negotiations have been stalled since mid-February, according to Putin's adviser, "Trump believes that the agreement that will end the conflict in Ukraine is close."
In this regard, the head of the Kremlin has replied that Russian troops maintain a "strategic initiative" in the battlefield and that "the objectives of the special military operation will be achieved in any case".
"Of course, we wish this were the result of a negotiation process , for which Zelenski would have to respond positively to the well-known proposal, "he said, recalling Russia's demand that Ukrainian troops withdraw from all of Donbass.
