Trump says Netanyahu won't be arrested in America
Israeli Prime Minister Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York, has declared that Netanyahu is a "war criminal" and is considering his arrest.
U.S. President Donald Trumpsaid on Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will not be arrested under any circumstances on U.S. soil. The Hebrew president could attend the UN meeting in September, and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Saturday that he is considering that option on the basis of the arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court.
Trump has made these statements on the social network Truth Social, where he has defended his close ally by saying that he is "fighting with the Islamic Republic of Iran." He has added that Iran is responsible for the deaths of Iranian protesters and American soldiers, adding that "the only people who should be arrested are those who led Iran into this spiral of unprecedented death and destruction."
The U.S. president did not comment on Mamdani's words in his message, but the Democratic mayor of New York told The New York Times on Saturday that he is in "active dialogue" with the city's Law Department to determine whether the New York Police has authority to arrest the Israeli president.
The city's first Muslim mayor insisted that Netanyahu is "awar criminalwho has been ordered to be arrested by the International Criminal Court. "During last year's election campaign, the young politician told the same newspaper that he would order Netanyahu's arrest.
On the other hand, the Israeli prime minister has replied to Mamdani that he is not afraid of Hamas and has accused the mayor of supporting Hamas.
InNovember 2024, the International Criminal Courtissued an international arrest warrant against Netanyahu foralleged war crimes against Palestinians and crimes against humanity.
