Trump believes an agreement on the Strait of Hormuz and the denuclearization of Iran will be "imminent"
The President of the United States has stated that negotiations with Tehran are taking place this afternoon, at the request of several Gulf countries, but that, according to the Iranian Foreign Minister, Washington is not involved in talks on the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that talks with Iran will resume later this afternoon to give the diplomatic route a chance.
In statements aboard the Air Force One, Trump said that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar had asked him to abandon the offensive because they believe there is a real chance of an agreement with Tehran.
"We need to talk to them for negotiation,"the US president said.
Trump has claimed that Iran called for a halt to the attack, which would be "the largest since World WarII. "According to the US president, the goal is to conclude an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and then move toward denuclearization of the Iranian program.
"The agreement is imminent in the Strait of Hormuz and then there will be an agreement on the denuclearization of Iran, "he said.
Iran denies U.S. involvement in the negotiation
Trump's statements contrast with Tehran's version. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has announced that talks with Oman to determine the future status of the Strait of Hormuz have entered a "final phase," but has insisted that the US has "absolutely nothing to do" with these negotiations.
One of the main issues on the table is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a maritime route which, before the conflict, accounted for about 20% of the world's oil trade.
Open conflict
Washington and Tehran signed an agreement on 17 June, 28 February, to endthe United States War , under which the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened and a final treaty on Iran's nuclear program could be negotiated within two months.
Since then, however, there have been more attacks between the two sides. Trump concluded this framework of understanding, and Iran again announced the blockade of the strait. In recent weeks, violence has also intensified in the Middle East, with Iranian attacks on American interests in Jordan and Iraq and Saudi Arabia's involvement in joint operations with the United States against Iraqi militias.
Despite this situation, Trump has insisted that he prefers a diplomatic deal to a new military escalation, and has argued that negotiations can avoid further conflict.
