Aweek after controllingthe largest ute-fire in France since 1949, thedepartment of Gironda, in south-west France, is experiencing a new fire that has so far burned 1,100 hectares of flames, Prefect Gilles Clavreul reported on Friday.
Although it slowed down during the night, in a few hours the fire has doubled its surface, and the prefect has described the next few hours as "key" to stopping its speed, waiting for the expected rains over the weekend.
"The next 15 hours will be crucial," Clavreul predicts, reporting that the flames are near the town of Luglon, forcing the evacuation of some 500 residents.
