U.S. and Iran resume attacks in the Middle East

The situation is once again tense in the Middle East, and despite a month without a direct attack, the United States and Iran have resumed their offensive against each other.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported early in the morning attacksby its armed forces on two rocket launch platforms  against Iranians on the island of Larak, infrastructures that CENTCOM believed were ready to launch mines into the Strait of Hormuz.

At least two people have been killed and several injuredin these attacks, according to Hossein Amirtimouri, governor of the Qesh administrative complex on the island.

Amirtimouri did not specify the condition or the number of injured, but indicated that they are all receiving medical attention.

Iran has responded to this offensive and attacked two Jordanian air bases used by the US military and one of the United Arab Emirates.

The Gulf Cooperation Council, composed of six Middle Eastern oil powers, has called on Iran to cease its "actions" and warned that these attacks are a "dangerous escalation," as well as a "flagrant violation of the sovereignty, security and stability of those countries."

For his part, UNSecretary General  Antonio Guterres has found it "regrettable" that the attacks are resumed and has called on the parties to "resume diplomatic talks that will enable an agreement to be reached to restore stability and confidence in the region."

Ormuz, closed since July

Iran closed the Hormuz crossing in mid-Julyfollowing U.S. shelling of southern Iranian territory, restoring the U.S. siege of Iranian ships and ports in order to damage the Persian country's economy.

Over the past month, the United States has opened a route south of the Strait near the coast of Oman to reopen the shipping of oil and launched Operation Economic Pariah to further isolate the Persian country economically and try to subdue it after six months of war.
