The US plans to use "the mother of all bombs" in a possible attack on Iran
The U.S. Army has developed new plans to attack nuclear facilities and part of Iran's energy infrastructure, including the use of the largest non-nuclear bomb in its arsenal.
The U.S. Army has prepared the use of the GBU-43/B bomb ("mother of all bombs") if U.S. President Donald Trump orders the resumption of military operations.
This bomb is the most powerful non-nuclear weapon in the U.S. arsenal, which would lead to a significant escalation of the conflict, but several sources question its effectiveness in destroying certain strategic objectives and achieving war in favor of the United States.
Plan to attack nuclear and energy facilities
Trump has ordered the army to prepare new military options against Iran, including attacks on a major energy infrastructure, which also includes the use of the MOAB (Massive Ordnance Air Blast) bomb against facilities linked to Iran's nuclear program.
One of the sources cited by CNN indicated that the operation would have taken place before the withdrawal of US forces from the Central Command area (CENTCOM), a situation that would allow the Trump administration to predict a victory after the attacks and then quickly evacuate troops.
Another source has confirmed that plans to attack Iran's nuclear facilities naturally include the use of this bomb. Potential targets include the underground Pickaxe Mountain complex, where, according to the United States and Israel, Iran retains components of its nuclear program.
Trump, who has repeatedly threatened to attack these facilities, has maintained his goal of preventing Tehran from developing a nuclear arsenal.
The effectiveness of the bomb is in question.
GBU-43/B is a GPS guided bomb and the largest non-nuclear weapon in the US arsenal, whose destructive capacity allows the destruction of an area of about nine blocks of urban space.
However, its power does not guarantee that it can destroy high-depth facilities. According to sources cited by CNN, there are doubts about its ability to penetrate the ground sufficiently and obtain the nuclear facilities that the United States and Israel install in Pickaxe Mount.
As the Army continues to present different options for resuming attacks on Trump, some American officials have questioned whether the White House will be able to put an end to these operations.
