Alvaro García Ortiz has resigned as Attorney General of the State after the Supreme Court sentenced him to two years' disqualification for disclosure of secrets.
State Attorney General Alvaro García Ortiz has resignedafter the Supreme Court sentenced Alberto González Amador to two years' disqualification for leaking confidential information about Isabel Díaz Ayuso's partner.
The sentence also includes a fine of 7,200 euros and compensation of 10,000 euros for moral damages, in addition to the costs of the trial. This is the first time that the Supreme Criminal Chamber has convicted a Attorney General of the State .
Judges Ana María Ferrer and Susana Polo have cast an individual dissenting opinion, which has been submitted by the President of the Chamber, Andrés Martínez Arrieta, and the judgement will be heard in the next few days or weeks.
Notwithstanding the penalty, Garcia Ortiz may appeal to the Supreme Court for an incident of nullity, a procedure which rarely succeeds, but which would allow the Constitutional Court to be appealed.
The Spanish Government has announced that in the next few days it will begin the process of appointing a new Attorney-General to ensure that the designated person has the highest professional standing in the legal field.
