The President will deliver to Pope Leon XIV several gifts related to Gernika, peace and the Euskera
The Basque Government has highlighted the symbolic value of the gifts, which claim historical memory, the defence of peace and the protection of cultural and linguistic diversity.
President Imanol Pradales has given PopeLeon XIV, during his visit to the Vatican, a series of gifts with a great symbolic burden linked to historical memory, peace and linguistic diversity.
Among the gifts is the book "Guernica, Pablo Picasso" by the Basque poet and essayist Juan Larrea, which examines the famous painting by Pablo Picasso as a denunciation of the bombing of Gernika during the Spanish Civil War and as a universal symbol against violence and destruction .
The essay, published in 1947, addresses "Guernica" from a poetic, philosophical and ethical perspective and reflects on human suffering, exile and post-war hope. Larrea also had a close relationship with Picasso in the creation of his work for the Pavilion of the Republic of Paris at the 1937 Universal Exhibition.
Pradales has also given the pope a reproduction of the reinterpretation of "Guernica" by the Basque artist Jose Luis Zumeta in 1999. The work shows burning farms, mutilated people and other symbols of barbarism through a composition marked by expressiveness and color.
The Basque Government has stressed that "Gernika is a universal icon of peace and freedom" and a symbol of remembrance and reparation for Euskal Herria in commemoration of the bombing of 26 April 1937, the 90th anniversary of which will be celebrated next year.
The third gift was a poem bythe Basque writer and thinker Jon Sarasua, delivered in Basque and translated into Quechua. The text values linguistic and cultural diversity and recognizes the pope's commitment to indigenous languages throughout his career.
The Basque Government explains that withthegesture wants to thank Pope for his involvement with the world's minority cultures and languages The poem defines the Basque Country as a "community and task" and as a collective effort to keep alive an open identity "from particularity to all".
