PNV and EH Bildu claim in a joint statement a new political relationship between Euskal Herria and the state
The initiative coincides with the 150th anniversary of the abolition of the Fueros and the 50th anniversary of the Bergara Mayor's Movement; both ephemerides will be remembered this Sunday.
PNV and EH Bildu will proclaim this Sunday in Bergara the recognition of the Basque nation and will call for a new political relationship between Euskal Herria and theSpanish State based on bilaterality. In the run-up to Sunday's event, they have agreed and publishedthe note called the Bergara Declaration, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the abolition of the Fueros and the 50th anniversary of the Movement of Mayor of Bergara.
The presentation of the declaration took place in Gernika and was attended by the mayorsof both the PNV and EH Bildu, who linked the two ephemerides to the defence of the Basque self-government and claimed "a relationship based on mutual respect" and "a relationship based on recognition between two political subjects".
The document also states that " a relationship that takes the form of a new legal and political status that respects the democratic will of the Basque people ".
"We do not want to recover the past. We want to transfer to the future the desire for freedom that comes from the past. The Fueros expressed their desire to translate the spirit of self-government, adapted to the present times, into the political instruments that we as a nation need. Not out of nostalgia but out of responsibility.
A Historical Foundation
The document takes a historical tour, with special attention to 21 July 1876, the day of the abolition of the Fueros. "Previously, the institutions and political powers of the Kingdom of Navarre had been drastically curtailed by the Agreed Law of 1841; and the territories of the French Basque Country had also lost their historical rights as a result of the French Revolution.
"Our predecessors knew that political freedom and social cohesion are inseparable from each other, and that is why they built institutions that combined popular participation, work and solidarity. That heritage that combined popular authority and egalitarianism showed that self-government is not an end in itself, but an instrument in the service of the well-being and freedom of citizens."
The Mayor's Movement
On that basis, the declaration proclaims the spirit of the 1976 Movement of the Mayor of Bergara. "In a People emerging from the darkness of Francoism, the Basque municipal representatives met in Bergara. In commemoration of the centenary of the abolition of the Fueros and, above all, to look to the future.
"Effective Political Power"
Finally, the PNV and EH Bildu have "reaffirmed" that "the Basques have the right to freely and democratically decidetheir political future. "" And we reaffirm that the democratic will of a people cannot be subjected time and time again to legal limits, political interpretations or reasons of state.
