Earthquakes

An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 on the Richter scale hit eastern Japan early Sunday morning, particularly in the Tokyo region, wounding 30 people and disrupting some rail services. Japan's Weather Agency (JMA) has ruled out tsunami risk.

Grenada has spent another sleepless night, counting replicas, following the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the province yesterday. Experts have confirmed that both the province and the metropolitan area have been stuck in a seismic complex since 14 August: a succession of earthquakes of similar power on the surface that can last for weeks or months.

After being closed since Tuesday afternoon, the monumental complex has been reopened this Wednesday with all its usual route except the Alcazaba Pass. In addition, to ensure the safety of visitors, the routes through the Nazarene Palaces and the Generalife have been adapted.

Last night there were six distinctive shocks in Granada and the surrounding metropolitan area.

Amongst the inhabitants of Granada there is a great deal of nervousness about the earthquakes.

Another 4.7 earthquake in Granada has caused minor injuries to three people, including a minor. The epicenter has been in the town of Gojar in Ranada, but it has also been felt in the other territories of Andalusia. Granada monuments have had to be closed as a precaution, including the Alhambra itself.

The earthquake hit the island of Flores this morning, off the north coast and 15 kilometres deep, and evacuated some 2,000 people, causing injuries and material damage.

The earthquake has had its epicenter in Alhendine and the 112 emergency service has received more than 200 calls, in addition to a fortnight of replicas in the Vega area of Granada, without any injuries.

The epicenter of the 7.4 degree earthquake was in San José del Palmar, in the department of Choco, in the Pacific region, with the latest data showing 3,975 injured and 45,523 families affected, in addition to the destruction of 12,828 homes.

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the north-west of the country has killed 273 people and injured some 3900.

At least 240 people have died, thousands have been injured, and hundreds of buildings have collapsed as a result of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that has struck Colombia, while search teams continue to work against the clock to find potential survivors under the buildings. Rescuers raise their hands and demand absolute silence. Any important sound can be a sign that someone is still alive.

We have had the opportunity to talk to some Basques who are in Colombia, we have been with some UPV medical students and a group of Guipuzcoan friends who are still unable to remove their fear from their bodies, but grateful that they are safe and sound.

Bilbao's consul has stressed that Colombians are going through "very hard" times and has called for help to rebuild their country.

Johana Garcia Osorio is one of 19,000 Colombians living in the Basque Country who, since the earthquake, have not heard of an aunt.

The government has contacted all Spaniards registered in a first census, except 164, and asked them to provide information on their condition. Albares claims that there is no record of Spaniards injured or killed.

Several organizations have set up channels to collect donations to help those affected by the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia.

Dozens of buildings have collapsed, hospitals are overflowing, some airports have closed and curfews have been imposed as rescue efforts resume.

At the time of the earthquake, our colleague from EITB, Ander Lopez de Lerena, was in Colombia. In the capital, he noticed the shock in Bogotá.

It has been felt in Bogotá, Cali, Popayan, Manizales, Armenia, Pereira, Medellín and other cities in the centre and west.
