The Basque Government confirms that there are increasing numbers of young victims in calls for male violence
In 2025, the SATEVI service registered 3,087 telephone calls from 2,054 applicants, more than 90 per cent of whom were linked to violence by their partner or ex-partner.
The Basque Government has confirmed that more and more young women victims of male violence are asking for help by calling 900 840 111, most of which are cases of violence by their partner or ex-partner.
On the eve of March 8 (International Women's Day), the Wellness, Youth and Demographic Challenge Counsellor, Nerea Melgosa, presented the latest data on the SATEVI telephone service for victims of male violence on Thursday.
It is a service attended by specialized professionals, providing immediate guidance and support to activate support and support resources and acting in coordination with other services.
In 2025, the service registered 3,087 telephone calls, 64 per cent in Bizkaia, 20 per cent in Gipuzkoa and 14 per cent in Álava, the rest outside the Basque Country.
1,495 victims treated
Among the care provided by SATEVI professionals, 1,495 women were treated. Among women with age data (605), the largest group was 41-50 years old (26.9 per cent), but the 18-30 years old (almost 23 per cent) and 31-40 years old (21.8 per cent) are close. "This shows the increasing weight of young women in the service," said the counsellor.
The majority of the victims (about 76 per cent) were of Spanish nationality and almost 45 per cent had minor children or other persons in their care. In view of this, SATEVI professionals estimate that more than 1,000 minors may be at risk of neglect due to exposure to violence.
Counsellor Melgosa has stressed that almost 8 out of 10 (79 per cent) were carried out by women in a situation of violence and 15 per cent by those around them to seek help and receive instructions.
Violence by partner or ex-partner
In 2025, more than 90% of telephone calls were for partner or ex-partner violence, an increase of almost 3% over the previous year.
Calls for gender-based violence within the family accounted for 5 per cent and for crimes against sexual freedom for 4 per cent.
In cases of partner or ex-partner violence, psychological violence was detected in all cases, with 69 per cent physical violence, 36 per cent sexual violence and 35 per cent economic violence.
More than 92 per cent of the interventions were supported by SATEVI professionals, who, when deemed necessary, referred it to face-to-face care services; in resource-oriented cases, the Victim Assistance Service (10.6 per cent) and social services (8.4 per cent) stood out.
Chat Attention Channel
Many of the calls received in 2025 were from 016 (40%): from the official Spanish telephone for assistance to victims of gender-based violence to the service of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. This year the service is working to establish a chat channel and design a Community intervention plan to strengthen territorial coordination.
Chief Melgosa has defended the need to have this service, and has called for it: "If you are in a situation of violence, call 900 840 111. There are exits and resources."
