At least 132 people have died and more than 570 have been injured as a result of the 7.4 degree earthquake that struck Colombia, which collapsed dozens of buildings, left hospitals overcrowded and forced several airports to close.
The cityof Pereira, the capital of the department of Risaralda, has recorded the highest number of deaths (60 deaths), according to the association Asocapitales, located near the city of San José del Palmar (Choco), epicenter of the earthquake.
The figure reflects only the balance of the country's capitals , and does not include the deaths and injuries recorded in the surrounding municipalities and towns, which also include collapsed buildings and damage to hospitals, airports, public services and transport systems.
Pereira, Cali, Quibdo, Manizales and Armenia are among the cities most affected by the earthquake, forcing President Abelardo de la Espriella to declare a "national disaster".
Where and when did the earthquake happen?
The earthquake occurred at 07:34 local time (12:34 GMT) and its epicenter waslocated in San José del Palmar, in the department of Choco, 103 kilometers deep, according to the Colombian Geological Service.
