Gipuzkoa could have the tourist tax in effect this summer
The Foral Government Council provides for the adoption on 17 March of the Tax Regulation Bill. Ondoren will be submitted to the General Meetings for discussion and, if approved, the municipalities may begin to apply.
The municipalities of Gipuzkoa will be able to charge the tourist fee next summer if the timetable announced by Deputy General Eider Mendoza is met, according to which the debate on the rule will take place at the General Meetings in the spring.
The Bureau of Tourism of the Basque Country established the general tourist tax for the Basque Country in July 2025. The General Meetings agreed to collect it as a municipal tax by means of a foral standard to be approved.
In a hearing this Tuesday with the mayor of San Sebastián, Jon Insausti, MP Mendoza reported that the foral government is working on this foral rule that will regulate the application of this municipal tax and that "it will be made public in the next few days."
The phase of allegations will then begin, and once "answered" they are expected to be approvedby the Foral Government Council on 17 March .
As a result of these steps, it will be discussed in the General Meetings. Mendoza hopes that "agreement will be reached "and that it can be finally approved so that the municipalities can implement it from this summer onwards.
The MayorofSan Sebastián Jon Insausti has also been asked by journalists about the fee. Insausti has been "very happy" with this schedule, thanks to which tax "San Sebastian will win and the donostiarras will win." "If we finally want a tourist tax, it is to improve the quality of life of those who live here, of the local community," he said.
