The Supreme Court of Justice of the Basque Country has confirmed the suspension of the angula fishing campaign
In November last year, the angle campaign planned for 2025-2026 was suspended in the CSC after reports from the Basque Government confirmed the critical state of the species.
The Angula campaign of the 2025-2026 season will continue, as the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country has rejected the request of a fishermanto annul this decision.
In November last year, the Basque Governmentadopted a decreesuspending the campaign on the basis of reports confirming the critical situation of the species . Against this decision, a citizen appealed to the Supreme Court of Justice to declare the suspension null and void by means of a precautionary measure, but the judge who examined the matter has ignored the request.
In his appeal, the fisherman argued that the Administration has not taken into account the economic damagethat the suspension of the campaign would cause to the sector. "The cancellation of the campaign will result in a loss of profit for the whole year, which is impossible to recover once the season has passed," he said.
He also blamed the Government for taking the decision unilaterally and "uncoordinated" with the other communities on the Cantabrian side, where he recalled that angula fishing is permitted.
These reasons were described by the Vitoria Government as "interested" and reiterated that the general interest must prevail over individual interests.
