The Minister of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability of the Basque Government, Mikel Jauregi, has stressed that the Basque Country has increased its installed self-consumption power by 186 megawatts (MW) over the last five years, from 7 MW to 193 MW.
This growth is aimed at producing indigenous renewable energy and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Where did the last big photovoltaic plant open?
The photovoltaic self-consumption plant of the glass packaging manufacturer Vidrala in Llodio was inaugurated this Tuesday Mikel Jauregi, Industry Advisor, and Irantzu Allende, Vice Minister for Energy Transition.
The new infrastructureis oneof the largest photovoltaic self-consumption industrial facilities in the Basque Country, with a power of 7 megawatts and an industrial cover of 30,000 square metres, with an investment of 3.2 million euros and a 25% subsidy from the Basque Government's self-consumption support programme through the Basque Energy Organization (EVE).
The plant will increase the use of renewable energy in the production process of the Alavesa factory, which produces more than 500 million glass packaging annually, and prevent the emission of 1,909 tonnes of CO2 per year.

During the visit, the counsellor stressed that in the Basque Country "progress must be made in energy autonomy by developing the capacity to generate local renewable electricity to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels".
In this regard, it has highlighted the self-consumption programme launched by the Basque Government, which has enabled the Basque Country to increase its installed power by 186 MW over the last five years (from 7 MW to 193 MW), as well as the recent approval of self-consumption projects that add up to 72.5 MW, including the two wind farms in Labraza.
"Almost 60% of this new power of electric self-consumption comes from photovoltaic installations in industrial pavilions. In this sense, Vidrala is a clear example of an industry that is committed to energy transition by launching the largest industrial self-consumption plant in the Basque Country.
