A driver who ran over a cyclotourist and fled has been arrested in Erandio
After the accident, he fled and tried to set fire to the vehicle in order to hinder his arrest.
A 49-year-old man was arrested by the Ertzaintza on Wednesday night in Erandio (Bizkaia) on charges of various offences: injury, reckless driving, damage and, after an accident, leaving the sceneof the incident. The arrested man hit a pilgrim on a bicycle, fled and then tried to burn his car to make it difficult to arrest him.
The accident occurred at 22:55 on Wednesday on Axpe Ribera Avenue in Astrabudu, when the driver hit a person riding a bicycle as he began to advance.
After the hit-and-run, the driver got out of the car, but soon after he got back up and left at great speed, and several witnesses informed the Ertzaintza of the incident.
The cyclotourist is a foreigner who was making the Camino de Santiago and was taken to Cruces Hospital in serious condition.
After fleeing, the driver attempted to burn the vehicle in one of the parking lots outside the UPV/EHU campus in Leioa. Shortly thereafter, he was located by the police near the home of relatives and arrested on charges of various offences. Once the proceedings have been completed, he will be brought before the court.
