Nine researchers from the universities and centers of Hego Euskal Herria in the ranking 'Highly Cited Researchers'
Highly Cited Researchers 2025 has recognized 7,131 scientists from 60 countries for their extraordinary impact on their research fields. The nine Basque researchers recognized in this year's ranking work in fields as diverse as medicine, immunotherapy, energy, biomaterials or artificial intelligence.
The 2025 edition of the Highly Cited Researchers list includes nine researchers from universities and centers in the Basque Country in Hego Euskal Herria who are among the most prominent in the world working in fields as diverse as medicine, immunotherapy, energy, biomaterials or artificial intelligence.
Highly Cited Researchers 2025 has recognized 7,131 scientists from 60 countries for their extraordinary impact on their research fields. The classification is based on data from the Web of Science index and qualitative analysis from the Institute of Scientific Information in.
One of these nine researchers is Javier del Ser , a researcher in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Tecnalia and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), who has been included in this ranking for the first time; he has also been the only researcher in the Basque Country in the category of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. With more than 450 articles published, Javier del Ser's research focuses on the development of applied AA.
Michel Armand, a researcher at the CIC EnergiGUNE, a reference in electrochemical energy storage, thermal energy storage and conversion, and hydrogen technologies, is for the sixth time on the international scientific reference list. Armand, born in 1946 in France, began in the late 1980s with the research of lithium rechargeable batteries, combined with solid polymer electrolyte, which has made it possible, among other things, to develop major technologies related to electric vehicles.
Luis M. Liz-Marzán, head of the BioNanoPlasmonic Laboratory of the CIC biomaGUNE (Basque Center for Cooperative Research in Biomaterials), is one more year among the researchers cited in the interdisciplinary category of 2025. Professor Liz-Marzán has published 658 articles and compiles about 78 000 mentions, and his studies in various fields, such as chemistry, materials science, physics and engineering, have contributed significantly to other research, showing the importance of research.
Navarre, in medicine and health nabarmen
Ignacio Melero, professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Navarre and leader of the Cima and Clinic cancer immunology and immunotherapy programs, has appeared for the sixth time in the classification. He is the author of 390 articles and has more than 40,000 mentions.
Gema Frühbeck, director of the Metabolic Research Laboratory and co-director of the Obesity Area of the Navarre Clinic, a specialist in endocrinology and nutrition, with more than 457 publications and 36,000 mentions, is an international reference in obesity physiopathology.
For the second consecutive year Bruno Sangro, coordinator of the Liver and Pancreatic Cancer Area (more than 350 publications and 30,000 mentions), and Antonio González , director of the Cancer Center of the University of Navarre (CCUN), specialist in gynaecological cancer and author of nearly 300 scientific articles.
The Navarra delegation is made up of two other researchers linked to cancer immunotherapy: Miguel Fernandez de Sanmamed, senior researcher of the Onco-Applied and Transnational Immunology Group at Cima, who is on the list for the third year, and Maria Rodriguez Ruiz, researcher of the Combined Strategies Group for Transnational Immunotherapy and specialist in Radiotherapeutic Oncology, who has entered the ranking for the first time after a postdoctorate at the University of Weill Cornell (USA).
