On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, thousands of people have taken to the streets in Basque cities and villages called by feminist associations. The Euskal Herria Feminist Movement, on the one hand, and the Itaia organization, on the other, have held demonstrations in the five major cities.
Under the slogan "In the face of networks of complicity, feminist resistance. Your hypocrisy is violence!", the Euskal Herria Feminist Movement has filled the streets on Tuesday afternoon in Baiona, Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Donostia-San Sebastián and Pamplona.
Nahia Torrealdai of the Feminist Movement has addressed the institutions before the start of the demonstration in Bilbao. She has stressed that it is time to "bring to the center and put on the table the laws that they do not comply with and the protocols that they do not do." "Macho violence is not only when they attack us," she has said and has denounced that "institutional irresponsibility" underpins this violence. "
The socialist organization Itaia has also held demonstrations in the five major capitals, denouncing the rise of far-right ideologies and insisting that these groups "don't care about violence against women."
They insist that machismo is not an "ideological invention." They denounce that male violence is embedded in "women's everyday lives." To this must be added "the rise of fascist ideologies."
