76 Bilbao. The St. Thomas Fair will house 243 huts and 166 stalls in the Arenal
Organized by the BBK, it will bring together tradition, solidarity and sustainability and is expected to bring together about 100,000 people, from 09:00 to 20:00. This year 4,500 rations of beans will be distributed from the Bizkaia Cooking Meeting Foundation (Bisubi).
The 76 St. Thomas Fair in Bilbao will combine tradition and gastronomy with values of sustainability and solidarity, a date that, like every year, will fill the Arenal with huts, producers and visitors.
BBK, the Bilbao City Council and the Bisubi Foundation, the Bizkaia Cooking Foundation, have released on Thursday the details of their meeting with the agricultural sector in the territory, in which an estimated 100,000 people participate each year.
On the 21st of December, from 09:00 to 20:00, 243 huts will be opened in and around the Arenal of Bilbao, of which 166 will be for the direct sale of peasant products, representing 117 producers, along with 12 txosnas that make up the gastronomic and festive offer of St. Thomas Day.
In addition, the BBK Klima project will launch a new participatory dynamic this year with measures that promote proper waste management and contribute to the efficiency, sustainability and environmental improvement of the event.
It will encourage the recycling of glass to "strengthen its commitment to sustainability," so posts and 12 txosnas will use reusable glasses and biodegradable bags to reduce waste and avoid single-use plastics.
4,500 rations of solidarity beans
One more year, the Bizkaia Cooks' Meeting Foundation (BISUBI) will be responsible for coordinating the most supportive proposal in the St. Thomas market, and once again, gastronomy will be shown to be a tool for creating social cohesion and promoting sustainability.
To do this, from the first hour of the morning, 4,500 rations of Gernika beans with sacraments will be prepared by volunteers and collaborators, who will be distributed with the help of BBK volunteers and various social organizations. Solidarity rations can be tasted for 4 euros in the Tinglados area.
In order to make "maximum" use of food and avoid food waste, people will also be able to buy solidarity rations at home for 8 euros.
Each of the euros collected will be used to directly support associations working for social integration and welfare in Bizkaia. On this occasion, the proceeds will be donated to the Lagun Artean Reception Centre, the Gregorio Ybarra Deaf Reintegration Association, the Galdakao Volunteer Social Association and the Trans Minor Families Association.
