A person has been seriously injured in Errekaleor as a result of an attempted occupation
The Errekaleor Free Quarter collective has reported thatdozens of people entered the neighborhood early in the morningwithsticks, irons and stones and attacked several homes, injuring several people, one of them seriously, with a skull fracture.
One person is hospitalized with serious injuries from clashes between residents of the former URSSA factory in Vitoria-Gasteiz and residents of Errekaleor.
According to a report by the Errekaleor Free Quarter Association,a group of about fifteen people from the URSSA area tried to forcibly enter the suburban homes during the day.
The group has claimed that later in the morning dozens of people arrived in theneighborhood with sticks, irons and stones and attacked the area directly, resulting in several injuries, one of them serious. The statement states that the seriously injured person suffers cranial fractures and remains hospitalized.
Errekaleor has also warned that there is a chance of further riots in the coming days, and that there are testimonies that the attacks were planned beforehand.
In a second note, the group accuses the Ertzaintza of having facilitated or authorized the facts, although these statements have not been corroborated by official sources.
For his part, the Basque Government's Security Adviser, Bingen Zupiria, has argued that the Ertzaintza acted to ensure order and security, protect people and prevent disturbances at the request of citizens and the local police.
Zupiria has insisted that the role of the police is not to decide on the occupation of housing, but to maintain public security, and has rejected the accusations of the group.
The Vitoria-Gasteiz People's Party has also denounced the incident and called for urgent measures to address the situation of occupation in the city.
The facts are under investigation, and the versions of what happened remain contradictory.
