The population will grow in all Basque regions over the next decade except Markina-Ondarroa
According to Eustat, the migration balance will be positive between 2025 and 2035 in 240 municipalities of the Basque Country (95.2% of the total).
The population of the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV) will increase over the next decade (from 2025 to 2035) in almost all regions except Markina-Ondarroa, where population is expected to decline, according to data released on Monday by the Basque Institute of Statistics, Eustat.
Projections indicate that the number of deaths between 2025 and 2035 will be higher than that of births (Negative vegetative growth) in all Basque regions, while migration balances will be positive in all regions.
Thus, would be a positive migration balance in 240 municipalities (95.2% of the total), offsetting population losses from the negative vegetative balance.
Urduliz, Berango, Astigarraga and Derio will gain the most population
Of the 73 municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants in 2025, Urduliz is the one with the highest relative growth forecast, ahead of Berango, Astigarraga and Derio. Eustat forecasts a population growth of more than 10% in these municipalities between 2025 and 2035.
At the other end, 15 municipalities are expected to suffer small population losses, including Ondarroa(-6%) and Ermua(-4%).
Among the capitals, the largest population growth in Vitoria-Gasteiz
According to Eustat forecasts, the three capitals will experience population growth in the next decade. The largest increase, in both absolute and relative terms, will be in Vitoria-Gasteiz, with an increase of more than 11,000 inhabitants between 2025 and 2035, or 4.6%. On the other hand, Donostia-San Sebastiánwould increase its population by just over 5,000 thousand (+2.8%) and Bilbaoby about 8,000 (+2.3%).
In the three capitals, natural growthis expected to be a negative sign because deaths outnumber births. Aitzati, the three capitals will have a positive migration balance : it would be around 25,000 people in Bilbao, 20,000 in Vitoria-Gasteiz and 14,000 in Donostia-San Sebastián.
Ageing of the population
Due to the low birth rate, the population aged 0-14 will be reduced by 218 municipalities (86 per cent of the total), and the population aged 65 and over will increase in all municipalities except in three municipalities with less than 300 inhabitants, while the population aged 15-64 will fall in 153 municipalities and increase in the remaining 99.
