Between Altza and Pasaia they will double the frequency of the Mole from July 18
The new variant will allow trains to connect with Amara every 7.5 minutes, and 150 train drivers have been training on the new route for a month until it is operational.
Authorities at the new facility today.
From July 18, the Mole will have a new variant and, thanks to this two-kilometre underground section, trains will travel more frequently from Altza (San Sebastian) and Pasaiato Amara.
The Department of Sustainable Mobility of the Basque Government and Euskal Trenbide Sarea (ETB) have today presented to journalists the new route that 10 years ago, in 2016, extended the route of the Mole from the neighborhood of Herrera to Altza, now reaching Galtzaraborda (Errenteria).
In addition to the variant, the new underground station of Pasai Antxo ere will be opened on the 18th. From that moment on, the frequency of connection to Amara will be double: on working days and weekend afternoons trains will run every 7.5 minutes (now every 15 minutes); on weekends every 15 minutes (now every 30 minutes); and on Saturdays every 30 minutes (now every hour).
These new connections will make it possible to double the number of trains that will operate, from the current 136 to 274. "The public transport service will be significantly improved," said project managers.
ETS technicians have been inspecting the route for a month, during which 150 train drivers have been trained to drive.
Reduce waiting times.
Susana García Chueca, Counsellor for Sustainable Mobility, has stressed that with the new frequencies, the Department will make a "big leap" in reducing waiting times in the Gipuzkoa rail service. "As was the case so far in the Amara-Herrera section, from now on the residents of Pasaia and Altza will not have to look so much at the clock," she said.
In order to increase frequencies, ETS has had to expand its fleet of trains, and CAF is manufacturing five new units. ETS has done work with funds from the Basque Government.
Finally, the new underground station in Pasai Antxo will change the appearance of the neighborhood and allow the demolition of the current railway variant. In addition, a new public space has been created over the station: Our Alameda Square.
