A 19-year-old woman committed suicide after being raped by a man in Angelu
A19-year-old woman committed suicide days after being raped in Angelu (Lapurdi), according to feminist groups in the Basque Country, which have described what happened as "macho murder" and called for mobilizations for today and Monday in the capitals of the Basque Country.
The Socialist Women's Organization, Itaia, has reported in a statement that violence against women\u00A0has worsened in recent times, adding that the situation intheFrench state is "particularly harsh" because, according to its data, every two minutes a woman is assaulted or raped, and every three minutesa minor.
According to the feminist organization, these cases of male violence leave women "vulnerable and helpless." On the other hand, it denounces the impunity of the aggressors: "The spread of macho and reactionary ideas normalizes speeches and attitudes against women and creates a context for legitimizing aggression."
In view of this, they consider it urgent to "spread the anti-machismo attitude among the public." Thus, ithas convened rallies for today, Saturday, in the capitals of Hego Euskal Herria and in some localities. Aruñean will meet in San Francisco Square at 7:00 p.m.; in Donostia, on the Boulevard at 19:30 p.m.; in the Arenal of Bilbao at 19:00.
In the same vein, the transfeminist collective Sutan has denounced the "complicity and responsibility of patriarchal structures" and what happened in Angelu has also been a "macho murder." "The system and justice have left the woman helpless," and every macho murder is "exaggerated."
According to the newspaper Sud Ouest, the young woman committed suicide on 19 September, eight days after being raped by a man, and the alleged aggressor, a 36-year-old man, has since been in pre-trial detention.
