French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou presented his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday and has already announced that he will appoint a short-term replacement and will not call elections as many opposition parties have demanded.
Bayrou's resignation has paved the way for Macron to appoint his successor, whose names include Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu or Socialist Party First Secretary Olivier Faure.
The next prime minister will have as his priority the negotiation of a draft budget by 2026 and the search for agreements in a fragmented parliament.
Bayrou lost his motionof confidence on Monday on the difficult state of public finances and his support for deficit reduction plans.
The resignation comes in a context of political and financial tension, and the risk premium in France has been higher than in Italy for the first time in two decades.
The opposition led by Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon has called for early elections and accused Macron of being responsible for the crisis.
