European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday advocated setting a minimum age for social media access based on a report by a group of experts on possible EU measures to protect children on the Internet.
"Just as we do not give our children the keys to the car before they have a driver's license, or we do not allow them to buy alcohol until they are of legal age, so we must also set the age at which children can legally access social media," Von der Leyen said in a press statement.
