Trump questions the fairness of the U.S. election system and denounces China's interference

U.S. PresidentDonald Trump on Thursday questioned the reliability of the country's electoral system and announced the declassification and publication of "critical" information linking Chinese authorities to "computer attacks " and "foreign interference" in U.S. elections since 2020, in which Joe Biden won the election and Trump lost.

The Republican has claimed to have documents proving that this was " thelargest electoral data breach in history "since 2020 and that China had" illegal "access to the records of 220 million American voters.

Trump has claimed that Beijing did not want him to win that election and has accused the US intelligence community of withholding that information during its first term (2017-2021).

"I would like to announce the immediate publication of the declassification of crucial intelligence information tonight, which reveals alarming vulnerabilities in our electoral infrastructure, "the president said last night in a speech to the nation.

This hitherto confidential information would show, in Trump's view, that "the electoral system in the United States is seriously endangered by computer attacks, exploitation, and foreign interference." 

Trump has claimed that the dissemination of this information is not intended to "undermine confidence in the election," but to "correct vulnerabilities."

However, the documents published by the White House do not show that the 2020 election was manipulated or that the results were altered. 

Some American television stations, such as ABC, CNN, and NBC, decided not to broadcast Trump's speech live, so as not to precipitate his intention to spread doubts about the electoral system. 

Save America Act

However, his speech has been interpreted more as a speech to pressure the Senate to pass the United States Voter Eligibility Act, known as "Save America," before the November 3 midterm legislative election, in which the Republican majority in Congress is at stake.

The president has reintroduced the measure as a tool to prevent unauthorized individuals from participating in elections, linking electoral security to criticism of migration policies.

This law seeks to tighten the conditions for registering and voting in federal elections, requiring proof of citizenship and photographed identity, among other things, a measure that Democrats believe would make it difficult for the most disadvantaged sectors to vote.

The proposal has been approved in the House of Representatives, but is in difficulty in the Senate, where Democrats have rejected the move on the grounds that it could create obstacles for eligible citizens.

Failure 2020

After losing to Biden in 2020, Trump denounced electoral fraud without evidence and his theory was rejected by the courts. In that context, thousands of Trump supporters\u00A0 tried to take the Capitol on January 6, 2021 to prevent the certification of the Democratic victory.

The Republican was charged with his alleged role in trying to reverse the election results and his alleged responsibility in the assault on the Capitol, although his charges were withdrawn after winning the 2024 election.
