The Basque Meteorology Agency, Euskalmet , has today released the weather data for the month of July, very hot and very dry, which are the main characteristics left by last month. Average temperatures have been 3.6 ° C above those of the period 1991-2020, making the warmest July since 1970.
For many days thermal anomalies have exceeded 4 ° C. The most notable event was the heat wave from 5 to 12 July , the fourth of the year, which affected all the territories.
Also, between July 9 and 15, several records of the highest minimum temperatures in July were exceeded, and at many stations values did not drop below 22-23 ° C.
At the end of the month, between the 28th and 30th of July, there was another heat wave, shorter in duration, which mainly affected the interior.
Very dry except in Rioja Alavesa
In terms of precipitation, the previous month has been very dry, with extreme drought in some areas of eastern Gipuzkoa, with only the Rioja Alavesa being the only area where the recorded rainfall has been frequent.
Based on the data recorded so far in this century, it was the fifth driest July in the CSC and the driest in Gipuzkoa.
The low rainfall accumulated has been largely conditioned by stormy showers, which have led to increased rainfall in certain areas. The largest accumulations were highly localized and only one station exceeded 50 litres per square metre: Ameraun, with 52.7 mm.
The first two-thirds of the month was very dry, and the 25th of July was the only day that left large accumulations due to locally heavy stormy showers, the rainiest day of the month, with an average of 6.4 mm accumulated throughout the territory.
