Irene Arrarats has been appointed academic by Euskaltzaindia
The Hernaniarra linguist Irene Arrarats has been appointed this Friday by the Academy of the Basque Language at the monthly plenary held at the headquarters of the Academy of the Basque Language in Bilbao, filling the vacancy of the linguist Andrés Alberdi, who has become an emeritus at the age of 75.
One candidate was nominated by the academics at the October plenary session, Irene Arrarats, and at this Friday's session the Hernaniarra linguist has been appointed.
Irene Arrarats Lizeaga (Hernani, Gipuzkoa, 1967) holds a degree in Geography and History from the University of Deusto. Sheworked at Euskaldunon Egunkaria from 1991 to 2003, first as a corrector and translator and then as head of the Euskera. In 2003 she began to be responsible for the Euskera in the newspaper Berria.

Euskaltzaindia has appointed 101 full academics from 1918 to the present, and today the Academy consists of 24 full academics and 12 emeritus academics.
