"Frankenstein" will be the Festival's surprise film
The surprise film of the 73rd edition of the San Sebastian Festival will beFrankenstein , a new version of Mary Shelley's classic directed by Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and starring Oscar Isaac, Australian actor of Basque origin Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz and Mia Goth.
It tells the story of Dr. Frankenstein, the film that was stained at the Venice film festival: this brilliant but self-centered scientist will create a creature in a terrible experiment that will eventually ruin both the creator and the fatal creation.
Since his debut with Cronos (Zabaltegi, 1994), Del Toro has directed and produced numerous applauded films such as El espinazo del diablo (Made in Spanish, 2001), El laberinto del fauno (2006), Mimic (1997), Hellboy (2004), Pacific Rim (2013), Crimson Peak (2015) and The Shape of Water (2017).
The San Sebastian Film Festival regained its tradition of programming a surprise film in 2019 and has since released the following films: Joker (Todd Phillips, 2019), Sportin "Life (Abel Ferrara, 2020), Spencer (Pablo Larraín, 2021),

Actor, producer and director Ricardo Darín will star in the official poster of the 74 edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival, which will be held from 18 to 26 September 2026. The posters have been designed by the Wallijai Donostiarra studio. In the case of the poster starring Darin, they have created a collage from a portrait taken in 2024. Along with theofficial poster, posters from the other sections have also been released,wishing to pay tribute to the film trades.
