The Spanish Government confirms that it will allocate 2.1% to military spending under pressure
Representatives from 32 countries that make up the Atlantic Alliance will meet today and tomorrow in The Hague.
The Spanish Government has confirmed that it will allocate 2.1% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to military spending this year, despite the fact that yesterday NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte gave another number according to which Spain will have to contribute 3.5% of GDP because they have agreed to it.
Rutte said these words on the eve of the NATO summit in The Hague (Netherlands) today, denying what the Spanish Government had announced Pedro Sanchez. The Spanish Chief Executive made a special appearance on Sunday afternoon to explain that an agreement had been reached with the Atlantic Alliance on defence spending.
It remains to be seen, then, what Sanchez will say to NATO today and what remains to be spent on military spending. Accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister José Manuel Albares and Defence Minister Margarita Robles , respectively, will go to The Socialist President in The Hague.
On the other hand, US President Donald Trump will take a look at the summit a few hours after the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran . He will participate for the first time in the Atlantic Alliance meeting since taking office for the second time.
