Live: Trump announces a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, but Iran denies it
U.S. President Donald Trump said Israel and Iran approached him "almost at the same time" to call for peace.
"Israel and Iran came to me almost at the same time and said, 'PEACE!' The moment I knew was NOW. The world, and the Middle East, are TRUE WINNERS! Both nations will see the future full of LOVE, PEACE AND PROSPERITY," the president said on Monday night on the social network Truth Social.
However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has said that there is no "ceasefire agreement" with Israel, despite US President Donald Trump's announcement of a "total ceasefire" between the two countries.
"For the time being, there is no agreement on a ceasefire or a cessation of operations," Araqchi said in a message on the X social network. "As I have repeatedly said, the war was initiated by the Israeli regime, not by us."
Trump's announcement comes a few hours after Iran attacked US bases in Qatar and Iraq in response to the US bombing of three Iranian nuclear program facilities this weekend.
They believe the Iranian counterattack was designed to prevent an increase in the climate of war in the region, as, in addition to informing the US in advance of today's offensive, Iran warned a few days ago that the US could bomb US bases in the Middle East if attacked by the US.
The fighting between Israel and Iran began on 13 June, when the Israeli Government launched a military offensive against Iran to end its military and uranium enrichment infrastructure.
Since then, Iran and Israel have exchanged attacks on drones and missiles, and about 450 people have been killed in Iran and about 24 in Israel.
"We couldn't have closed today's deal without the talent and courage of the excellent B-2 and all those involved in that operation. In an ironic way, that perfect blow, late in the night, brought them all together, and the deal was closed!" Trump said on the Truth Social network.
The message comes hours after the president himself declared that Israel and Iran have reached a 12-hour "total ceasefire," after which they said that the war between the two countries "is over."
"CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL! Israel and Iran have fully agreed that there will be a COMPLETE CEASEFIRE (in approximately six hours, when both countries have completed their last missions) for twelve hours, at which point the war will be declared OVER," he wrote on his social network.
