The Ertzaintza seized 247 blades in 2026
In the face of criticism from the PP, Counsellor Zupiria has defended in the Basque Parliament the Action Plan for the Prevention of the Use of White Weapons in the Basque Country, although she has shown her willingness to review it "if necessary".
Security Counselor Bingen Zupiria has said that in 2026, so far, the Ertzaintza has seized 247 blades in Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, and has ensured that, although crime with these crimes has generally decreased, in some of them the "level of violence" has increased.
Zupiria has provided this information in the Basque Parliament in response to a question from PP Member Ainhoa Domaica, who has asked her to review the Action Plan for the Prevention of the Use of White Weapons in the Basque Country because she believes it does not work.
The counselor has explained that this year the Ertzaintza has carried out 183 actions against blades and has confiscated 247. With regard to the crimes committed with them, he has explained that these types of weapons were used in three of the five murders committed, in 33 cases of family abuse and 135 robberies with violence or intimidation.
Since the implementation of the plan in 2023, the Ertzaintza and local police have seized a total of 9,300 cutting elements, 16% of which are included in prevention operations, as detailed by Zupiria.
The counsellor has pointed out that, despite the decrease in crime in general , "the level of violence has increased in some of them", and has stressed that this plan "is necessary and will be reviewed as long as the professionals of the Ertzaintza deem it necessary".
