The Spanish Government proposes Teresa Peramato as the new Attorney General ofthe State, one day after the resignation of Alvaro García Ortiz . The proposal has been made quickly, since the hitherto Attorney General has resigned after being convicted by the Supreme Court of disclosure of secrets.
Peramato is a career prosecutor for 35 years and also a prosecutor for the Delegated Chamber for the Protection of Victims in Criminal Proceedings.
He has a long history in the fight against gender-based violenceand is one of the great drivers of judicial specialization in this field.
The appointment comes one day after Alvaro García Ortiz resigned as Attorney General of the State after the Supreme Court sentenced him to two years' disqualification for disclosing the couple of Alberto González Amador, president of Madrid Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
With regard to the appointment process, as explained by judicial sources, once the proposal has been approved, the General Council of the Judiciary shall issue a non-binding report, after which Peramato shall appear before the Justice Committee of the Congress of Deputies, after which the Government shall decide on the final appointment of the Attorney-General of the State.
Yesterday, García Ortiz informed the Minister ofJustice, Félix Bolaños, of his resignation after the Supreme Court sentenced him to two years' disqualification, a fine of 7,200 euros and compensation of 10,000 euros for leaking an e-mail related to the defence of Alberto González Amador, partner of Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
In his letter of resignation, the former Attorney-General assures that he was leaving office "without waiting for the reason of the sentence" and argues that he has always acted "with a public service vocation. "The Supreme Court's decision, which has had the individual opinion of two judges, will be fully heard in the coming days.
In the meantime, the Government has speeded up the replacement of the Attorney-General's Office to ensure "institutional stability" and to enable the new official to take office as soon as the necessary procedures have been completed.
