Fujimori is back ahead of Sanchez on the final straight of the Peruvian election ballot
With 98.2% of the minutes counted, Fujimori won 9,032,651 votes (50.001%), while Sanchez won 9,032,000 (49,999%).

The candidate of the ultra-right-wing Fuerza Popular party, Keiko Fujimori, has overtaken his rival, the leftist Roberto Sánchez, in the second round of the presidential election in Peru, which took place this Sunday and in which 98.2% of the votes were already counted.
According to data released by the National Electoral Jury (HEN), Fujimori has won 50.001% of the vote, with more than 9.03 million votes, while Sánchez, a candidate from Juntos por el Peru, has won 49.999% of thevote, with only 600 votes of difference between the two candidates, one of the closest electoral contests in the country in recent years.
In the count held in the days after the vote, Sanchez won 42,000 votes, but as the count of votes cast abroad progressed, the situation turned upside down and the Conservative candidate took the lead, as Fujimori has more support abroad.
In any case, this result is not final, since almost 2% of the votes have not yet been counted. Most of these votes are cast abroad, such as the contested minutes, many of which are taken in Lima, where Fujimori also has an advantage.
The official results of the second round will be released in approximately 30 days, according to HEN, after the review and resolution processes have been completed.
Fujimori's fourth attempt
More than 27 million Peruvians have been called to these elections, including 1.2 billion citizens living abroad, and thanks to them the president will be elected for the period 2026-2031, after a decade marked by political instability.
In the event of a victory, Fujimori would win the presidency in his fourth attempt, after losing in the second round of 2011, 2016, and 2021. It would also mean the return of fujimorism to power 26 years after Alberto Fujimori left the presidency.
In fact, the candidate has focused much of his campaign on the proclamation of his father's legacy , who was in the cargo from 1990 to 2000, and his daughter has promised to rule like him. Those who support him say that Alberto Fujimori laid the foundations for the economic and commercial stability that made the country's growth possible, while destroying the subversive groups Sendero Luminoso and Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru.
