23.3% of Basques are in favour of independence and 69.9% are in favour of the right to decide, according to the National Metro
Support for a Basque state is 41.1%, and 27.7% of the men and women surveyed are against it.
23.3% of Basques agree to become independent from Spain and France, and 46.4% do not accept this option, while 69.9% opt for the right to decide, according to the Nazionalmetros survey, with data collected in the Basque Country.
In the last edition of the poll, the anti-independence stance was 43.2%, while the pro-independence stance was 22.2%.
Telesforo Monzon eLAB and the research group of the UPV/EHU Parte Hartuz presented the results on Monday in Bilbao, where they explained that in this eighth edition 1,446 surveys were conducted for this purpose.
Along with traditional perceptions of sovereignty and independence, they have also examined the public's views on security and police.
Thus, 41.1% of respondents say they are in favour of a Basque state and 27.7% do not accept this option.
For the authors of the survey, the data suggest that the concept of independence may be more related to "certain identities or political sensitivities" in the collective imagination, while the idea of the Basque state would generate "broader adherence."
Security
With regard to the perception of security, 80% of the population regards their environment as a safe place, three percentage points higher than the European Union's perception of it.
Similarly, respondents are more afraid of not having quality public services (92 per cent) or being deprived of retirement (89 per cent) than of being victims of theft or fraud (88 per cent).
Police
With regard to the level of trust in the police, 21 per cent have little or no confidence in the Ertzaintza, which rises to 35 per cent for local police and 38 per cent for the National Police, the Civil Guard and the French Gendarmerie.
In addition, 55% of the population said they had had "direct contact" with the police and 73% said they felt comfortable and safe.
According to the authors, the survey began in January, as security is at the heart of social and political debate and affects "people's quality of life."
