The precautionary measures requested bythe families of the students who took zero in the Euskera test of the University Entrance Test (USaP) have caused a great stir both in the academic community and in the political sphere. The Basque Government and the UPV/EHU have decided to increase the number of places provisionally in the 2026-2027 year, and before this agreement was announced, not a few have spoken out on the court decisions.
The UPV/EHU Student Council has warned that the judicial decision that students who went to justice should not take into account the qualification of Euskera"may violate the principle of equal access to university".
In the same vein, EH Bildu's parliamentarian, Ikoitz Arrese, has said that he "strongly" condemns the decision of these courts because this "unacceptable" measure is "an injustice to thousands upon thousands of Basque students" and can create "a very dangerous precedent . "
Arrese appeared before the media in the Basque Parliament, where he described the position of the Basque Government as' particularly worrying 'because the examination' calls into question a system of correction '.
Ezker Anitza-IUhas also described as"clearly discriminatory" the court decisions that "suspend zeros" and has called on the Basque Government to increase the number of university places.
In a statement, the left-wing party considered that "the decision of the judges adds another problem to this case, which is that, instead of providing protection and security, it harms the rest of the students who passed the tests in accordance with established rules."
With regard to trade unions, Steilas has been critical of precautionary measures because, in his view, it "punishes the effort" of students who have passed the subject and "undermines equal opportunities" in the education system.
For this union, the results of the test show the "imbalances" that exist in the Basque education system between the different networks and, in its view, "this latest measure only reinforces its diagnosis".
For its part, LABhas called on the Basque Government to support the teachers who have corrected the examinations and "not to fuel the onslaught against the Euskera."
The union has pointed out that the Basque Government, driven by a political stance against the current rectorate of the UPV/EHU, "has strengthened and fuelled a problem that until now did not generate corrections to selectivity tests in an area where the Department of Education and the UPV/EHU have shared responsibility".
Demands on the Rector to comply
Gipuzkoa PP Presidentand MP Muriel Larrea has accused UPV/EHU Rector Joserramon Bengoetxea of "declaring himself in absentia" and of acting with "irresponsibility" and "unacceptable arrogance that students will pay for . "
Through social media, Larrea has warned the rector that justice "is not negotiated, but something to comply with," and has lamented that at the UPV, "nonsense has reached the level of true hope."
On the other hand, the PSE-EEExecutive Committee has asked the UPV/EHU Rector to "guarantee the rights and equal opportunities of all students in university entrance tests, as this has not happened with the evaluation of certain examinations in the latest USaP call, and to complywith the precautionary measures indicated by the courts. "
The PSE-EE Secretary of Universities, Innovation and Research, Patricia Campelo, has also called on the Department of Education of the Basque Government "to be proactive in defending models and to act actively in the face of any attempt to challenge the current system, which is obliged to provide all students with adequate competence in the two official languages".
