People shot in Valcaldera have been honored in Pamplona and Cadreita on their 90th birthday
In 1936, the military authorities released 52 Republican prisoners from Pamplona prison on the pretext that they would be released, but killed them. Nine decades later, their remains are unknown.

The Association of Relatives of Rifles of Navarre (AFFNA-36-NAFSE) this Sunday recalled and paid tribute to the victims of the Valcaldera massacre on the 90th anniversary of the murders of 23 August 1936.
As in previous years, events have taken place in two places closely linked to these events: on the site of the old prison in Pamplona, from which the prisoners were taken, and in Valcaldera, in Cadreita, where they were taken and killed.
On 23 August 1936, military and civilian authorities announced the release of a group of Republican prisoners from the Pamplona Provincial Prison. "It was not a release. It was a cleanup," said relatives. The prisoners were released and taken to Valcaldera in Cadreita by a group of Requetists and Phalangists, where they were shot.
"Among them were prominent intellectuals, Republican leaders and trade unionists from Pamplona, as well as six neighbors of Obanos," they recalled.
Of the 52 people taken to Valcaldera, 51 were killed. OnlyHonorino Arteta Echartemanaged to escape and survive.
90 years later, the whereabouts of the remains of the people killed in Valcaldera are unknown. It is known that the remains were exhumed from Cadreita and secretly transferred to the Valley of the Fallen. Years later, thanks to the efforts of some relatives, the remains were returned to Navarre in 1979.
After a tribute in Corella, it is believed that they were buried in some nearby cemetery, but from that moment the trail is lost.
For this reason, AFFNA-36 has called for "breaking the silence and recovering the oral and documentary memory" and has again called for help so that anyone who may know any information can report it: "We must know what happened to the remains of the victims of Valcaldera and guarantee their families the right to find them," they said.
