Basque public school

The PISA report reveals a regression in the reading comprehension of young people in the Basque Country. Writers Jasone Osoro and Jon Arretxe have been presenting their books in schools for 25 years and have noticed a smaller presence of paper books in classrooms. However, booksellers have not noticed a decline in sales. Instead, they are seeing changes in reading habits: several creators are beginning to adapt their texts linguistically, and the book that a child of ten years ago read is now being read by a 12-year-old.

However, the PISA report shows a further decline in the scientific, mathematical and reading skills of students in the Basque Country, placing them close to the last positions in the State and well below the European average.

The Mendigain school in Zizurkil has organized this year's party, in which 27 small schools have participated. The organizers have stressed that "small schools and villages feed each other and together build the future of our people", for which they want small towns and neighbourhoods alive.

The streets and squares of Santurtzi have been filled from the first hour with events, family shows, workshops and other activities aimed at strengthening the open and community character of the Basque Public School.

The Department headed by Begoña Pedrosa, for its part, has ensured that the subject is guaranteed by the redistribution of students to schools in Ibarrekolanda and Bertendona. The demonstrators believe that this is a new attack on public education.

The House has approved an amendment by the PNV and the PSE-EE advocating strengthening school planning and zoning to promote a more inclusive school. PP's initiative has been rejected, as has an amendment to the entire Sumar.

The union alleges that the agreement is blocked, that the wage increases already agreed have not been paid and that there has been no progress in ratios, functions and working hours, a situation which, according to the union, is unsustainable and directly affecting the quality of service.

According to an UGT study, teachers in the ACV receive the highest salaries in Spain at all stages of education, while in Asturias the lowest salaries are recorded, with differences of more than 800 euros.

A thousand people have demonstrated in Bilbao, called by the Harro platform of the Basque Public School, to denounce school segregation as a "structural" problem. The platform calls for "bold policies" and criticizes that the current measures, including the segregation table, establish an "unfair" system. The demonstration, under the slogan "Against segregation, the public is the way!"

The system of vertical electric kitchens is pioneering, "in situ", to offer healthier menus.  Education Counselor Begoña Pedrosa has explained that in these vertical kitchens, scale pots are used, and workers "have no chance of using heavy containers." "The use of cooking is simplified by multifunctional systems, a single machine can run several processes," she said.

Elgoibar hosted the 2025 Kilometroak festival on Sunday under the motto "Salto-saltoka" , where a meeting was held in support of the ikastolas of Gipuzkoa, in which the Education Counsellor of the Basque Government, Begoña Pedrosa, spoke.

100 years ago, Tolosarra Ixaka Lopez Mendizabal published "Xabiertxo", a book to teach children how to read in Basque. Haritz Azurmendi, a member of the Jakin Foundation, has prepared the celebration of the centenary and, in addition to explaining curiosities about the book, has spoken about Javier's contribution to the Basque Country.

The Minister for Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries, Amaia Barredo, has stressed the need for the Basque Country to be an "international benchmark" in raising awareness of food waste.
